Reading all the threads about the Garmin makes me wonder if I need to get the GPS in addition to our phone? If I was you i'd take a paper map too, the signal probably wont be that good to rely on mobile. Not sure what the iphone apps go on but its probably a 3g or 4g signal and maps can take ages to load. It's fairly widely available in most bookstores and large newsagents in Ireland. I am going to copy here a reply I left to another recent question about cell phones in Ireland. See comments below for charges. My old GPS was ancient so it would not have made sense to buy the map upgrade. We found the GPS very helpful. I also agree that the paper map is good for a reality check, but the GPS was a lifesaver in terms of taking the map-reading pressure off the co-pilot who was busy flinching as we drove close to the hedges. We purchased bandwidth for our ATT iPhones before we left and it was an expensive way to go.

Downloading email sucked up most of the bandwidth but we rarely found free WiFi. Hotels wanted to charge between 15 GBP and 22 euro per day per device, so even if you have the new iPhone set up to rebroadcast to other bluetooth-enabled devices, the WiFi purchased from the hotel cannot be rebroadcast.

In other words, when my husband bought the hotel's WiFi for his phone, he could not share it with our son's iPod touch. Having said all of this, one cousin insists there is free WiFi all over Dublin so maybe I just didn't know where to look. As the prior poster commented, do make sure you have texting if planning to communicate with relatives there. Everyone uses it including my 84 year old uncle and 72 year old legally-blind aunt. Rarely used the phone to call anyone other than restaurant reservations and car service.

Does your phone have GPS? What App do you have - whatever App you have you also need to make sure you have local maps. If you have an Iphone then Google Maps will be already loaded and you can use this for navigation - though expensive as you need an open connection to the internet via the Cell network all the time it is in use.

Alternatively there are Navigon, TomTom and CoPilot apps downloadable that load the mapping to your unit. All related maps for Ireland are very detailed and they come as a package of UK and Ireland mapping. You can also add to an Iphone and whichever Navigation App you use including Google Maps a new iphone app for Ireland North and South called point8 - which allows you to use Loc8 Codes a new digial postcode for Ireland.

Just ask folks at your destination to give you their Loc8 Code and just punch it in - no need for complicated directions - point8 is available for iTunes. This just pushes into the side of the Garmin. This way you have the Garmin for use at home afterwards when needed and you can sell the microSD card to someone else coming to Ireland or UK when you are finished. Taxes from Loc8Code. All UK and Ireland map packages include Northern Ireland and with the exception of some very new motorways - all mapping of Ireland is very detailed especially for the smaller roads.

The bloggers suspect that the 5th G will have it when released at year-end, but the current Verizon iPhone does not have it. Additionally, the data charges are outrageous see rates above in my note , so as you said, I can't imagine using the phone as a GPS as we sometimes do here at home where we have an unlimited data plan. If needing to purchase a new GPS and not just the Europe maps, the model we bought was the Garmin and it worked great in Ireland when we were there the week before last.
